HP 2116, Early Computer
Historical Application Notes

 

I was recently solicited by another HP early computer enthusiast who found some application notes listed in the AN chapter of this web site which were of major interest to him. Hans Kulk himself user of some early HP computer related equipment for experiments and research in sounds and acoustical signal analysis, made me aware of the high historical value of the 135 series application notes... Thus giving me the energy to scan and create PDF files of their contents which are particularly rich of original photographs showing on-site installations of HP 2116 computer and data acquisition environment.

Most of these ANs have been printed in the early 70s, four to six years after the 2116 birth. They are examples of various real-life installations designed and provided by HP to solve measurement and control problems found in a wide variety of industries.

They perfectly illustrate the way followed by Hewlett Packard to make its entry into the computer age.

Automatic Test Systems:
HP 9500 Series Catalog

 

Computers, instruments and accessories appearing in the following Application Notes were listed and described in this Automatic Test Systems Catalog published in 1970. This brochure offers to potential user of Automatic Test Systems most of the information needed to configure a system.

Most of the instruments available to set-up these configurations were the same as the stand-alone version with sometimes the add of a specific interface. They were classified as: Stimulus (5105A/5110B Synthesizer) - Measurement (2402A Integrating Voltmeter, 3450A Multimeter, 5325B Counter, 5360A Computing Counter) - Converting & Conditioning Devices (3400A RMS Voltmeter, 432A Power Meter, 8405A Vector Voltmeter) - Switching Devices (9400A/B Switch, 2911A/B Scanner, 9402A Interface Panel).
This very reduced listing, just to illustrate that in 1970 already, the association of HP computers and instruments could give answers to almost every measurement automation problems found in the industry.

This will become one of the strongest HP's leadership. Three years later it will be boosted again by the introduction of a second generation of desktop scientific calculator, the HP 9800 series, Model 10, 20 & 30, and a still alive today standardized interface: the Hewlett-Packard Interface Bus (HP-IB).
